Formal application to student teaching is required two semesters in advance of the experience. Applications may be obtained from the Office of Field Placements. At the start of every fall and spring semester, the Office of Field Placements hosts mandatory information sessions about the application. Typically, these mandatory information sessions are held on Saturdays, and provide students with an overview of the application process and the requirements for student teaching.
For more information about entrance to student teaching, please see the Student Teaching Handbook, or consult with an advisor.

Enrollment in Student Teaching
Enrollment in student teaching courses is facilitated by the Office of Field Placements. By the end of the semester prior to student teaching, all student teachers will be registered. This approach is taken to ensure that student teachers are enrolled with the correct supervisor for their student teaching experience. A final check for the completion of all requirements for student teaching is also undertaken at this time.
Please contact Monica Kielar, at mkielar@roosevelt.edu, if you have any questions, or if you fail to see your enrollment in your student teaching course by the end of the semester before student teaching.

New Mandated Reporter Training and Form Completion Process
All Roosevelt University student teachers are required to complete an online training course for mandated reporters by the time of the first meeting of their student teaching seminar. This training includes:
A pre-training assessment (13 multiple-choice questions)
60-90 minutes of self-paced interactive training
A post-training assessment (13 multiple-choice questions)
A Certificate of Completion (which must be printed at time of completion)
Upon completion of the training, turn in your Certificate of Completion and a signed Acknowledgement of Mandated Reporter Status Form to the Office of Field Placements at either campus. Please staple your forms together. The Office of Field Placements will mail all completed forms to the Office of the Director of DCFS, as required by state rule.
Student teachers may not participate in the seminars that start on January 13, 2011 until they have turned in BOTH of the forms required to either Monica Kielar on the Schaumburg campus, or Dana Blanton on the Chicago campus.

TB Test and Criminal Background Check
State law requires that all student teachers have a current TB Test while student teaching. You are advised to call prior to going to any of the clinics listed on this information sheet. Please remember to bring a photo ID to the clinic, and return this completed form to the Office of Field Placements at either campus.
If you are a student in the Elementary, Early Childhood, Special Education, Music Education or Secondary Education teacher preparation programs or in the School Counselor program, you need to have completed a Background Check through Argus Services BEFORE participating in any Field Experiences including classroom observations, internships, practicums and student teaching. Only Argus background checks are acceptable (regardless if you have completed a background check in the past through another company).
The cost is $34.00 and students may pay by cash, check or credit card. Bring your photo ID. Argus background checks are good for three (3) years.
If you need a background check you must call Argus to make an appointment. Students may call Argus Services at 312-377-9441 to schedule an appointment. Argus is conveniently located at 123 W. Madison, Suite 1200, Chicago, IL.

Assessment of Student Learning
All RU student teachers are asked to create and implement units of instruction that are responsive to the needs of their students, and that make a positive impact on student learning, as evidenced by assessment data. Student teachers should be prepared to develop and implement effective formal and informal assessment instruments and approaches; to collect, organize and present assessment data; and to analyze and apply key findings from assessment data to instruction. Please consult with your university supervisor and cooperating teacher as you undertake these activities, and expect to document your efforts within the context of an assignment to be uploaded to and evaluated on Taskstream.
Cooperating Teacher Evaluation Forms
Below are links to the Student Teaching Evaluation Forms that cooperating teachers are required to fill out and submit at mid- and end-of-term. Cooperating teachers will receive a link to the appropriate form by email, and should print out a copy of their evaluation before they click "submit." This printed copy of the evaluation should be kept for back-up documentation, and may be shared with student teachers and university supervisors. Please note that comments embedded in the online evaluation will not appear in the printed copy; consequently, the College of Education recommends that cooperating teachers save their comments in a Word file, and copy and paste as necessary. In addition, the evaluation form must be completed in one sitting, as it is not possible to save and return later.
Please note that in order to complete the evaluation, cooperating teachers will need to obtain their student teacher's Roosevelt University ID#. In addition, cooperating teachers will need to provide a reliable email address to their student teacher and the university supervisor.

For more information about the assessment policy and procedures, and what you need to do on Taskstream to activate the assessment process, please visit the COE Dispositions blog.
Please note that all student teachers must activate the Dispositions DRF on Taskstream by the first seminar meeting. Please see the COE Dispositions blog for more information and a video about how to do this.
