Spring 2011 Student Teaching Orientations

To enhance understanding of what is expected during student teaching, all Spring 2011 student teachers are required to attend an orientation before the student teaching experience begins.

The orientation for early childhood, elementary, and special education student teachers will be held on Saturday, December 4th, 2010. Students have the option to attend the orientation at Chicago's Gage Building (4th floor commons), from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., or at the Schaumburg campus (Alumni Hall) from 2 to 4 p.m. Student teachers are not required to attend both orientations - they should choose the session that is most convenient for their schedules.

The orientation for secondary education student teachers will be held on two separate days and will be incorporated as part of Dr. Pincham’s and Professor Metzger’s SEED 350/450 classes. Students may attend the orientation at Chicago's Gage Building (room TBA), from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, November 30th, or at the Schaumburg campus (room 563) from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, December 2nd. Students are not required to attend both orientations - they should choose the session that is most convenient. A separate email noting the room locations will be sent out once this information becomes available.

During the orientation, faculty will explain their expectations, program requirements, and other valuable information regarding this important experience.

Attendance at the orientations is mandatory for all Spring 2011 student teachers. Attendance at one of the above orientations is one of the professional responsibilities that all RU teacher candidates have; consequently, candidates who fail to attend an orientation are out of step with the expectation for professional behavior (attendance) outlined on the rubric for the Assessment of Professional Dispositions. The names of student teachers who fail to attend an orientation will be provided to current instructors in the college and to future university supervisors.  Any student absent from the orientation should arrange to meet with the appropriate university supervisor prior to the start of student teaching, at his or her convenience.  If an instructor or university supervisor determines that the failure to attend the orientation is part of a pattern of poor attendance during the Fall 2010 or Spring 2011 semesters, a score of "inadequate" may be given in the "professionalism" area of the Assessment of Professional Dispositions, necessitating a Student Performance Review prior to or during student teaching.
